On September 19, 2023, a video of a Japanese woman working as a YouTuber in South Korea being verbally abused by a man passing by is causing a stir, according to YTN, South Korea.
The video, posted on the YouTube channel “YUIPYON YUIPYON,” which has 622,000 channel subscribers on April 17, shows a Japanese woman, YUIPYON, traveling in Korea with a Japanese man she knows.
The scene in question begins with a man passing by and asking her, “Where are you from?” Yui Pyung is asked by a man passing by, “Where are you from? When Yui responds, “I’m from Japan,” the man starts spouting off such rude comments as, “Do you know which country I hate the most?
Yui-pyung replied, “We came here because we still love Korea,” but the man’s anger did not abate and he continued, “Don’t say that to a Korean. Don’t tell me you are from Japan.” “You have been trapped by Japan for 31 years,” “I hate Japan the most,” “My grandfather died because of the Japanese,” and so on.
When Yuipyong apologized and shed tears, saying, “As a Japanese, I am truly sorry,” the man left, shouting, “Dokdo (Korean name for Takeshima) is Korean territory,” “Get out of Korea,” and “Don’t come to Korea again.
After the man left, Yuipyong wiped away her tears and sighed, saying, “But what [the man] said is right,” showing that she could not hide her shock.
Korean netizens who saw this commented, “Huh. I’m really sorry,” “What a thing to do to someone who came here because he loves Korea…,” “I’m embarrassed too,” “I apologize instead,” “It’s true that there is anti-Japanese sentiment historically, but it shouldn’t be expressed that way. There are more people in Japan who like Korea, except in the political world.” “Not all Koreans think that way. Cheer up,” etc. (Translation and Editing/Domoto)
