U.S. Ambassador to Japan, H.E. Emanuel, spoke sarcastically about China’s response to the ocean discharge of treated water from TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant at a dialogue event held in New York on April 20, saying, “China is refusing to import Japanese marine products even though it is fishing in the Japanese Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Emanuel again praised the ocean discharge, saying, “It is an effort based on transparency and scientific evidence, and in cooperation with the international community. On the other hand, he said of China, which opposes the release, “They did not cooperate with the international community during the outbreak of the new coronavirus. They are still not cooperating.” Emanuel believes that the difference between Japan and China is “transparency and accountability.
Emanuel has frequently criticized China on social media and other media. In September, NBC reported that aides to President Biden, who is seeking to repair relations with China, asked him to refrain from posting. However, he continued to post on Twitter on September 16, stating that “One Belt, One Road,” the massive economic zone proposed by President Xi Jinping 10 years ago, “casts a long shadow of debt and dependence on the participating countries.
On the other hand, Emanuel mentioned the current Japan-U.S. relationship, including Japan’s plan to raise its defense-related budget to 2% of gross domestic product (GDP) in FY27, and said that it has changed from a “defensive” alliance to an “offensive” alliance.
