The Hong Kong-based private anti-Japanese group, “Hong Kong Action Committee,” has removed three statues of girls symbolizing comfort women that had been installed near the Consulate-General of Japan in Hong Kong. An official of the committee revealed to this newspaper that the statue was installed in 2017 and the Japanese government had requested its removal from the Hong Kong government. There were three statues of the girl, but they were all removed at the end of July. The installation of the statues was meant as a protest against Japan, as 2005 marked the 80th anniversary of the Marco Polo Bridge Incident, which triggered the Sino-Japanese War.
The committee has continued its anti-Japanese activities, claiming that China has territorial rights to the Senkaku Islands in Okinawa Prefecture.
