Every Wednesday, former comfort women and their supporters, including female students, gather around the statue of a young girl in front of the Japanese embassy in Seoul and continue to hold violent anti-Japanese demonstrations.
For young Korean women, the comfort women statue is a symbol of “bad Japan that defiles the purity of girls. The price for a miniature of such a comfort woman statue is 25,000 won (about 2,500 yen).
[A popular brand that supports former comfort women
Marie Monde” handles a wide range of products, including phone cases, stationery, bags, and clothing. The brand became a topic of conversation when it was worn by a member of a popular Korean idol group in Japan.
The brand was originally established to support former comfort women, and uses designs of flowers such as magnolias and nadeshiko to represent former comfort women.
A portion of its profits are donated to former comfort women, and from 2012 to August 2018, the total amount of donations reached approximately 2 billion won (200 million yen). The company landed in Japan last December. The phone case costs 23,000 won (about 2,300 yen).
