Mr. Ok-Soon Joo, the head of the conservative Korean group “Onma (Mother) Unit,” which is calling for the removal of more than 100 comfort women statues in South Korea, recently visited Japan and attended an international symposium on the comfort women issue held by researchers from Japan, the U.S., and South Korea. Mr. Zhu pointed out that the theory that former comfort women were forcibly taken away from their homes was a “lie,” and appealed that “deceiving the public with lies is unforgivable, whether in Japan or in Korea.
Furthermore, Zhu criticized Yoon Mi-hyang, former head of the former comfort women support group “Justice and Memory Solidarity” (formerly known as Para-Taigi Kyodo), who was convicted with a suspended sentence at the second trial for embezzling donations to the group. The prosecution is appealing the verdict. Yun, who has led the comfort women’s movement for many years, has been aiming to “destroy” Japan-Korea relations, he said. He also expressed the view that there is a “Yun Mika problem” separate from the comfort women issue.
The following is a summary of Zhu’s remarks at the symposium.
◇ ◇.
Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Yu-Soon Ju, and I am the representative of the Onma Unit in Korea. The Onma Unit may not be well-known in Japan, but in Korea it is a well-known conservative women’s patriotic movement that has attracted attention from the mass media.
The relationship between Korea and Japan has deteriorated greatly due to the comfort women issue. This issue is based on historical facts and is a question of truth or lies. It is true that there were comfort women. However, the question is whether (the women) were taken by force or not.
In Korea, we have been fighting with Yun Mika on this issue for more than 30 years. Yun was the woman who was trying to destroy our relationship with Japan. Therefore, I believe it is important to fight against this lie in my capacity as a Korean, especially a Korean woman. That is why I have been participating in the struggle against the comfort women issue for several years now.
