Top Leader of South Korea’s Largest Opposition Party on Hunger Strike
Lee is a man who has repeatedly made radical anti-Japanese statements, such as “It was Japan, not the Korean Peninsula, that should have been divided.
Representative Lee declared, “We will do everything we can to stop the release of nuclear contaminated water,” and began to do something.
He has begun a “hunger strike” in protest by fasting.
The hunger strike began at the end of August, criticizing the Yoon Seong-yeol administration for its lax response to Japan’s release of treated water and other issues.
On the 19th day, however, Lee’s health deteriorated and he was taken to the hospital.
The public applauded his actions of concern for the country…or so it seemed, but it was not to be.
Why was there no sympathy?
One reason may be the timing of the hunger strike.
Prosecutors had demanded an arrest warrant for Lee on suspicion of illegal money transfers to North Korea and providing favors to a condominium developer.
It was on the same day that he was taken to the hospital.
Wasn’t this a hunger strike to avoid arrest?
A succession of rebellions from the political parties of his family members
In the midst of all this, a vote was held in the National Assembly on whether or not to agree to the arrest of Representative Lee, and there was a wave of defections from the political parties within his own party.
A reporter asked Representative Lee, “Do you still deny your suspicions?” and asked Representative Lee, “Do you still deny your suspicions?
Another reporter asked, “Will you explain in direct speech today?” Another reporter asked, “Will you give an explanation in person today?
However, Lee did not answer any of the reporters’ questions and went inside silently.
Early on the morning of the 27th, the Seoul Central District Court dismissed the request for an arrest warrant against Representative Lee.
